Questions

I've got a few questions for you guys.

But first, I have to gush about how fantastic Phil was this evening! What a super star! Love him.

And I have to let you know that Kaswyn looks a little off. He looks uncomfortable in his left hind leg. I've been a bit lax about giving him his Polyglycan shot (big shame on me), so he was overdue for that. But I think it might be time to inject his hocks again. I know, he's not competing, but I want to make him comfortable. He's still active and doesn't need to go around hurting. Anyhow, I gave him his shot tonight (and I felt terrible because I couldn't see his vein very well through all that neck hair and I had to stab him FOUR times! Two needles later...sheesh...) and I'll see if he looks better. If not, then I'll have to vet out to inject those hocks.

So, for my questions -

#1) If you had a choice, for just ONE day, would you rather your horses' stall get cleaned, OR your horse get out of it's stall? You have to choose one or the other, and getting out could mean turnout, walking, lunging, whatever. This is a one day thing, like the barn says "On this Sunday you get one or the other". Which would you choose?

#2) It's been awhile since I've written one of my stories. You guys interested in that, or do most of you come for the horse content? I've got a doozy of a story swimming around in my head, and it's not horse related at all.

OH! One last thing. Dressage Today contacted me to write a very small thing for them. I'll post about that tomorrow.

#1) So ... either the horse stays inside, in a clean stall, or leaves the stall dirty and hangs out outside?

Hmmm. Hard to say without knowing what 'outside' consists of. All day turnout? Easy - let him out. He won't be in the stall anyway. A short lunge or handwalk? I'd say clean the stall since he'll be standing in it most of the day.

If I HAD to make a choice without knowing more information I'd say ... what's the horse's personality/attitude? Is he in regular work the other days? How antsy does he get inside? What's the weather and ground conditions like there? Hahaha I'm no help at all, sorry.

#2) I like the stories! I just started reading today, and went through a couple of stories :) They were very amusing. I'm keen for more, horsey or not.

1) i would rather my horse get out, because either way, hes not standing in his manure all day long, unlike it not getting cleaned plus him not getting out, he is guaranteed to be standing in yuck.

2) I LOVE your stories, and miss them. I would love to read another.

I have no idea why these are related but clean stall vs, horse out, horse out.

I would go with turn-out. I love your stories. Please post more.

My choice would be TURN OUT! I would rather see my boys happily grazing outside being horses. I don't mind picking my stalls. Love horse related posts but personal off topic stories remind us all that we do have lives outside the barn! I really enjoy reading your blog and keeping up with Phils progress!

Are we saying to clean the stall and leave him in it all day, or let him out in the pasture all day? I'd rather Moon be out all day in the pasture and brought back in to a clean stall! If he has no choice, I'd probably chose to have him in a clean stall, even if he's left in all day. But he's a pretty easy going, laid back, love to sleep pony ; )

I think I'd chose the turnout option; my mare would be whacked without it. Plus, her stall could wait a day to be cleaned if she's not going to be in it. However, if the turnout lasted for a mere hour or two and the remaining 22-23 hours would be spent in a gross stall, I'd choose the stall cleaning.
Oh, and while I mostly come for the horse content, I enjoy the 'other stuff' too :)

Out! Didn't even have to think about that one. I would much rather Ace have the chance to be out and moving around than stuck in a cleaner stall all day. Better for his mind, better for his body - and I think the pros outweigh the cons of standing in a dirtier stall overnight.

And yes, I like your stories! Even if they aren't horse related.

1. I would rather my horse get turned out, because they would be out of the poopy stall until they were brought back in, & the stall would be cleaned the next day, right? 1 day of a little extra poop won't hurt. :)

2. Your stories are fantastic, wether they are horse related or not!

Get the horse out would be my choice. And any story as long as it keeps us entertained :)

I really like your stories, horse and non. POST!

I would rather a horse get out of his stall. Horses are meant to roam free and there are many studies proving that turnout is the healthiest option. It reduces colic, helps with mild arthritis, reduces ulcers and more. If the barn wants to skip cleaning for 1 day that just means they've got an even bigger mess on their hands the next day!

Hey thanks for the post this seems like a nice blog. Good question btw. Im not sure what I would do because I would want to let my arabian out for a day but his stall is so dirty. I think I would let him out for a day.

1) I'd choose for him to get out of his stall. I'm a big believer in movement for horses. Well, for people too. It keeps us all healthy!

2) Sure, send us a story!

3) That's awesome that you're going to be in DT! :-)

Answer to question #1...

It would really depend on the horse. If we were talking about Diago...and it was for only one day a week...I'd say he'd get exercise! He HATES being stalled so I can only imagine how badly he'd behave if he missed a day of exercise. *shudder* I don't like dirty stalls but could overlook it for one day so long as D was getting exercise. I might feel differently if I had a horse that liked being stalled but as it is I don't.

Answer to question #2...

I like reading anything and everything that you write regardless of content. :)

Question 1: I don't think being in a stall for a whole day really bothers them as much as we might be bothered. Even my OTTB who had crazy energy would happily stay stalled if he was still given attention. For me, I would take the clean, dry stall over the turnout - especially if I was still able to spend as much time as needed in the stall with my buddy.

Question 2: I enjoy reading whatever you have time to write. :)

turnout, everytime.
not only does your horse get out but he poops outside therefore creating less mess to clean up ;)

I think some of it would depend on my horse. If he was a total stall trasher I would probably go for the cleaning. But if he was reasonably neat (hey, some of 'em are) I'd probably give him the getting out.

On these two questions:
1) I'd want them out. I'd rather have them as mobile as possible. I could handle cleaning the stall or letting it wait a day, but my horses need turnout.
2)I love stories. Anything you have to say will be fine.

I think I would rather have my horses stall cleaned.

Stories are always great!!!

1. I would want turnout, I think that is more important for horsie happiness.

2. I like a good mix of stuff, and would like to hear a story about now.

3. Jealous! I'm so jealous! Dressage Today doesn't give me the time of day :-(

If the stable is giving the option of turnout with a dirty stall or kept in with a clean stall I would choose turnout. I could always come out and clean the stall myself. I like horses to be outside as much as possible. In my opinion keeping them stalled all the time is unhealthy for them mentally and physically. I always imagine it would be like going to jail (never been so just guessing). If you're used to being free to move around and do what you want, then being put in a small room all day with nothing to do would be absolutely horrible! I get bored easily though. Maybe I'm anthropomorphizing, but that's just me lol.

I love reading your stories!!
